Job Summary:

The Assistant Project Manager (APM) will support the Project Manager in all aspects of heavy highway bridge painting projects. The APM will be involved in project planning, scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. This role requires a strong understanding of heavy civil construction practices, specifically related to bridge painting and protection, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Planning and Coordination

  • Assist in developing comprehensive project plans, schedules, and budgets for bridge painting projects.
  • Coordinate with internal teams, including field crews, and external stakeholders such as subcontractors, clients, engineers, and government agencies.
  • Facilitate project coordination meetings and maintain effective communication channels throughout the project lifecycle.

Project Execution and Oversight

  • Monitor project progress against the schedule and budget, identifying potential issues and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Assist in managing subcontractors, tracking their work, and ensuring compliance with project requirements and safety standards.
  • Oversee daily construction operations and ensure efficient resource allocation, including personnel, materials, and equipment, in conjunction with the Superintendent.

Financial and Administrative Management

  • Support the Project Manager in managing project finances, including reviewing and coding invoices, tracking costs, and preparing payment requests.
  • Assist in developing and administering subcontractor and purchase order change orders.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including daily status and safety reports, submittals, RFIs, change order logs, and close-out documentation.

Safety and Quality Control

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, including OSHA standards and project-specific safety plans.
  • Implement and monitor the project quality control plan, ensuring the painting work meets the required standards and specifications.
  • Conduct safety inspections and promote safe working practices on the job

Job Summary:

A Bridge Painting Estimator is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for painting and coating projects specifically focused on bridges and other structural steel infrastructure. This role requires a blend of technical expertise in painting and coatings, an understanding of bridge construction, strong analytical abilities, and effective communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Project Evaluation: Analyzing blueprints, technical documents, and project specifications to understand the scope of work and identify factors influencing costs.
  • Cost Estimation: Calculating the quantities of materials (paints, coatings, primers, abrasives), labor, and equipment needed for surface preparation and application. Sourcing quotes from suppliers and subcontractors as needed.
  • Bid Preparation & Submission: Compiling detailed bids that are competitive and profitable, considering environmental regulations, safety standards, and project timelines.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with project managers, field supervisors, engineers, and clients to clarify project details and ensure accurate estimates.
  • Risk Assessment: Identifying potential risks or challenges during the estimating phase and recommending strategies to mitigate financial or schedule-related impacts.
  • Cost Analysis & Benchmarking: Utilizing historical cost data and market trends to establish reliable pricing and ensure cost competitiveness.
Additional Duties
  • Attending pre-bid meetings and conducting site visits to assess project requirements.
  • Staying updated on industry trends, technologies, and safety regulations related to bridge painting.
  • Maintaining accurate records of project costs and estimates for future reference and analysis.
  • Collaborating with the project team during contract development and negotiation.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Experience: Several years of experience in bridge or industrial painting, with a focus on coatings and surface preparation techniques, is typically required.
Technical Skills
  • ​​​​​​​Proficiency with estimating software like HCSS Heavy Bid
  • Strong understanding of painting processes, surface preparation techniques (including abrasive blasting), coating systems, and material requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices related to industrial painting and working at heights.
Potential Certifications
  • Certifications such as the AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance, formerly NACE or SSPC) Coating Inspector Level 1 or Bridge Coating Inspector Level 1 can be highly beneficial, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
  • OSHA certification or other relevant safety training is a plus.

    Preparing surfaces for painting by removing old paint, rust, and other debris, and ensuring proper adhesion of new coatings.
  • Coating Application:
    Applying paint, stains, and protective coatings to bridges and related structures using various tools like brushes, rollers, and spray guns.
  • Quality Control:
    Inspecting completed work to ensure high-quality finishes and adherence to project specifications and safety standards.
  • Safety Management:
    Ensuring all safety procedures are followed, including proper use of equipment, personal protective gear, and adherence to fall protection and other safety regulations.
  • Material and Equipment Management:
    Ordering materials, maintaining equipment, and ensuring the availability of necessary tools and supplies.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
    Communicating with project managers, inspectors, and other team members to ensure smooth workflow and timely completion of projects.
  • Problem Solving:
    Addressing any issues that arise during the painting process and recommending solutions to improve productivity and quality.
  • Documentation:
    Completing necessary paperwork, such as daily time sheets, accident reports, and work orders.
Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of bridge painting techniques and materials.
  • Experience with surface preparation methods, including abrasive blasting.
  • Proficiency in using various painting tools and equipment.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to safety regulations.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work at heights.
  • Knowledge of bridge construction and maintenance is helpful.
